Castle and Countryside: Painting in and around Bardi

Taught by Jo Hall

Wednesday May 13th Arrival Day
We transfer  from the airport to Casa Bezzia at Pietracervara, around 11.30am, arriving in time for a light lunch.  After a rest and unpacking we will visit the studio and discuss our sketching trip to Bardi, its colourful market and medieval castle the following day.  Evening dinner at Casa Bezzia

Thursday 14th May
In the morning we visit Bardi market in the town square.  We can choose to sketch there or from a viewpoint taking in views of Bardi Castle towering above the River Ceno, followed by lunch at a Trattoria.  We will spend the afternoon at Pietracervara, painting from our sketches or working outside from the landscape.  Dinner will be at Casa Bezzia.

Friday 15th May
In the morning we will take the road upstream along the Ceno Valley to Ponte Lecca, a beautiful rocky part of the river, lunching at the trattoria nearby after our painting session.  The afternoon can be spent at Casa Bezzia, working outside followed by dinner at Casa Bezzia.

Saturday 16th May
Today we visit the cheese factory at Vischeto where we also have the opportunity to taste the cheese and draw the dairy herd, followed by a picnic box at Casa Bezzia and drawing from the landscape or wild flowers in the meadow outside the studio in the afternoon. Dinner will be at a local pizzeria.

Sunday 17th May
A short drive will take us to the other side of the Ceno, to La Colomba, where we can paint the view looking back across the valley to the medieval castle and Bardi town, and enjoy Sunday lunch at the restaurant before returning to Casa Bezzia to develop our paintings. Dinner will be at Casa Bezzia.

Monday 18th May
Paint at Casa Bezzia or a nearby village (Raffi or the village just past Costagiminiana) returning to Casa bezzia for a lunch box. Spend the afternoon at Casa Bezzia with a cookery demonstration in the evening.

Tuesday 19th May
In the morning we return to Bardi  to paint the colourful houses near the castle, the church with the ornate façade or the view from the castle ramparts followed by a pizzeria lunch.  This will be our last opportunity for shopping.  In the afternoon perhaps we could visit Pietro’s studio/workshop or the castle before returning to Casa Bezzia for a final review of paintings, pack up the studio and enjoy our final dinner.

Wednesday 20th May Departure Day
After breakfast we will have time for packing, final sketches and photos before a light lunch and transfer to the airport, leaving Casa Bezzia about 3.30pm.

There may be slight alterations to the itinerary depending on weather etc.
